Not the Hippopotamus

October 19th, 2011 by The OJBG Team · Bishop's Garden, Books

By:  Ashley

Here at OJBG Headquarters we’re editing new Class of ’96 Yearbook Videos, and we’ve been looking a lot of old footage from all 4 seasons of the show.  Seeing scenes from the rave in Season 2 made me think of the even more awesome, insane, seizure inducing rave from episode 3.4, “Cavort in the Bog”… And, of course, our favorite fakey faker–little Miss Betty Crocker herself–Remi.

Ep. 3.4 Cavort in the Bog (…lots of cavorting in the bog)

Ever wonder why Remi was christened the “hippopotomas” in Season 3?  When I first read it in the script, I had no clue what the reference was.  Apparently I was deprived as a child because it all comes from a 1982 children’s book by Sandra BoyntonBut Not the Hippopotamus.  Granted, I wasn’t born yet when this book was released, but I’m definitely familiar with some of Boynton’s other work (she’s written more than 40 books!)  Here’s the title poem from But Not the Hippopotamus:

“BUT NOT THE HIPPOPOTAMUS”

A hog and a frog cavort in the bog, But not the hippopotamus.
A cat and two rats are trying on hats, But not the hippopotamus.
A moose and a goose together have juice, But not the hippopotamus.
A bear and a hare have been to a fair, But not the hippopotamus.
Now the hog and the frog hurry out for a jog, with the cat and the rats in their new running hats… While the moose and the bear and the goose and the hare are doing their best
to keep up with the rest, But not the hippopotamus.
Then the animal pack comes scurrying back, saying “Hey! Come join the lot of us”
And she just doesn’t know – Should she stay? Should she go?
But YES the hippopotamus! But not the armadillo.

Alas, Remi was the hippopotomas, it all makes sense now. And as we all remember, this little revelation didn’t go over too well with her friends.  But, luckily everything worked out in the end, and we’ll get to see the the 4 not-so-new-anymore kids embark on new adventures in Season 5, starting in November!

The Best Week Ever!!

November 8th, 2010 by Kathryn · 90's, Bishop's Garden, Blog, DC

It has been sooo busy here at OJBG headquarters… and its only Monday?!?!?

First… Season 3 OFFICALLY premieres today!!! The LONG and tedious wait is finally over. Check out Koldcast to see the FIRST episode. The OJBG teens finally graduate…watch the pomp and circumstance. Gwen and Sarah’s relationship complication grow further… a friend present??? And graduation means the rise of the NEW kids.

Second, not one but TWO new stories about OJBG just went live on the web. Digital Chick TV.com just did an interview with Otessa all about her inspiration behind the series and updates on Season 3. Check it out at digitalchicktv.com!! and BYT has just published their beyond amazing profile of Otessa and the show! Way back in the throws of filming, we took a quick break to model it up with Shauna and Libby from BYT.

This is the result…

Check out the article at www.brightestyoungthings.com!! Post a comment about how beyond awesome OJBG is… also check out Libby’s description of the show. I couldn’t have said it any better myself!!

“The series, set in 1990s D.C., follows an ensemble cast during those totally crucial and always entertaining drama-fueled teen years and oh! The costuming! The music! The awkward sexual awakenings! It’s My So-Called Life meets Skins with the bonus of local landmarks so satisfying for District residents with locational inferiority complexes.”

FINALLY, OJBG is hosting a screening party this Saturday, November 13th at the Cleveland Park Firehook Bakery (3411 Connective Ave). Come at 4 pm for hot chocolate, yummy deserts and footage from Season 3.

Introducing Libby!

October 5th, 2010 by Kathryn · Bishop's Garden, Blog

As we fast approach the release of OJBG Season 3…we thought you all would like to meet the new teens that will be visiting Bishops Garden this season. Check back weekly for new character bios!

I’m Libby, yes that’s short for Liberty but please don’t call me that! My mom only uses my “government name” when I am about to get grounded…so you can probably guess that I like to party. That is an understatement. I love to party! However, sometimes my irresponsibility can get me in trouble. I am not a troublemaker or anything….I just like to have fun with no bounds whatsoever.

You can call me a new aged hippie, I love keeping the peace, concerts….and all the other stuff hippies partake in ;). If you wanna get pop culturally technical I am a cross between “Denise” from the Cosby Show and Drew Barrymore (during her wild, “poison ivy” days) with a splash of Punky Brewster. Remember her!?

I love those freeze pops that come in a pack of hundreds from Sam’s Club, the color purple (not the movie, but the actual color), tutu’s, Doc Marten’s, glitter, black lights, glow sticks and just chilling with my “Fantastic Four”, which are my besties. I also love to RAVE, my friend Remi got me into it and there was no coming back! I love Radiohead (its great “make out music” surprisingly), Janet Jackson, Madonna and my guilty pleasures are karaoke and watching Star Search re-runs. You think you’re ready to hang with me? If you are actually thinking about it, you are halfway there!

Catch Libby played by the beyond stupendous Donnis Collins in the premiere of OJBG Season 3 in November!!

Secrets from the Set- Tourist Edition

July 14th, 2010 by Kathryn · Bishop's Garden, Blog, DC, film, OJBG, On Set, Otessa, teen web series, washingtonian, washingtonians, webseries, Women In Film

We REALLY REALLY wanted a quick shot of Adrian, OJBG’s loyal screw up, in front of the Jefferson Memorial. However, that task proved easier said than done. The crusty DC leadership rarely grants permission for film crews to stand aside fanny pack wielding tourists on the National Mall.

Not easily sidelined by evil government red tape, we vowed to carry on and screw the system. The rule states a film crew is defined by its use of a tripod, well than we’ll do it handheld. Take that Park Service!!

On the day of filming, we rolled up to Tidal Basin with our crew and seven actors. Next task, blend in and devise a good alibi to go along with it.

Our story: We are a close knit family from the Midwest. Gene, our loving father and occasional Director of Photography, went all Angelina Jolie and adopted us from all over the world. We truly are the most diverse family you will ever see. Adrian and Shawn, two of our brothers, just joined the Navy. To celebrate, we road tripped it to DC to get a quick photo op of them in front of the Jefferson Memorial.

Us Attempting to Blend in

We then waited and waited for the opportunity to explain our ingenious story to any wayward cops. We waited and waited with no avail. A family of confused tourists did stumble by and request a photo op. Apparently they are big fans of our armed forces. However, one did seem slightly alarmed at the mohawk Adrian was hiding under his sailor hat.

“How do you get away with having that?!?!”

Adrian replied, “I just don’t tell anyone.”

Adrian, Shawn and their new Tourist Friends

Satisfied with that answer, the family wandered off.  Apparently, someone believed our story.

General Jankiness

July 13th, 2010 by emily · Blog, film, Otessa, otessa ghadar, teen web series, webseries

Hello lovers. Sorry we’ve been MIA for the past few weeks. We’ve been running around like hormone pumped chickens with our heads cut off trying to film and finesse the best season evah. To summarize the sketchy and chaotic nature of the past three weeks check out the invite to our wrap party (carefully constructed at 5am). Below, sketchy Exhibit A.

Dear All,

We’ve survived eye patches, molasses, horrible re-scheduling requests (which have not been vindicated), HEAT, multiple locations, blue hair dye, and general jankiness. So with that in mind we would like to extend an invitation for all of you to join us at Comet Ping Pong (@ the corner of Nebraska and Connecticut Ave– 5037 Conn Ave) for an epic night of debauchery and hip shaking (but only Jorge).

So with that in mind, we would like to extend an invitation for those select few of you to join us at 5:30 PM, at Comet Ping Pong.
You don’t want to miss this.  If you do, you will be ridiculed ad nauseam, ad infinitum. (e.g. forever).

With much love and respect,
(Jorge says with peas and carrots).

OJBG Team
And here, sketchy Exhibit B.

Otessa, Paul and Lady Luck

HA. That should waft some sort of drift your way… did you get how delirious we were by the end of production?
Don’t worry, we’re still happy campers deep down inside our tummies :) Okay, we’re a little more grizzy and bear like – on the brink of a deep deep month long hibernation sleep… err, we wish.
Libby and Tamsin
P.S. Thank you Comet Ping Pong for putting up with our filming and wrap partay ;) We heart you. No really, we do. Did you notice the emboldened, italicized heart we just offered up to you?
