So far in Season 5 we’ve discovered that Gwen has made a big move to NYC and she and Sarah are trying out a “LDR” (Long-distance Relationship, obvi.)
Gwen will make a grand re-appearance in this Friday’s episode… & perhaps we’ll find out more about the future of Sarah + Gwen. Until then, watch Gwen fight off the advances of mysterious gentlemen in her alternative life as a telenovella star & read more about her character: http://orangejuiceinbishopsgarden.com/gwen/
It’s Blackout Wednesday, everybody (don’t run to the liquor store, this is serious.) As you may have heard, there are two pieces of legislation in the works that aim to stop piracy online but could threaten the freedom of the internet in the process. Sites from WordPress to LOL Cats are ‘blacking out” today in protest.
Orange Juice in Bishop’s Garden has been a victim of piracy from around the world. However, it is the openness of the internet that allows web-series like us to grow and flourish– even if as a result we lose some of our revenue to piracy. Because we produce content for the web exclusively, we rely on the internet to distribute and promote our show. Much of our success has been from the organic promotion of people talking about and sharing our show with each-other through blogging and social media sites.
While we don’t support piracy or copyright violation, we also do not support the maiming of free speech and creativity, in order to stop it. Piracy is a problem, but this censorship is not the solution.
Right now, the entertainment industry is pushing the passage of the Stop Online Piracy Act and the Protect IP Act (I would link to the Wikipedia page for each of those, but ironically it is blacked-out in protest today). The intention of these acts is to stop the piracy of music, movies and television online– but in reality it will have a huge impact on much more then that.
This video helps explain the potential effect of Protect IP and SOPA:
Instead of fighting it to the death, Hollywood should embrace and adapt to the internet as a new medium. The internet is a platform for creators to share content in new and exciting ways and makes it easier then ever to be creative. The television and movie industry will adapt to the internet, the same way the radio industry had to adapt to them. We’ve evolved from listening to The Lone Ranger on old-time radio to watching Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog on our iPads– and that’s OK. Entertainment changes (and grows!) with technology. The internet is also a way to preserve and share our beloved mediums of entertainment, old-time radio shows can be listened to online at Archive.org (which is also blacked-out today.)
Right now, websites are required to remove copyrighted content if presented with a formal DMCA take-down request. With the passage of these bills, the government would be able to block entire web domains for one violation and make websites responsible for what their users post and comment. Start-ups could be shut down easily and links and content shared on social networks would be heavily censored by the sites in order to avoid being blocked by the government. Think of all the spam comments and pirated TV episodes that show up on YouTube– should the entire website be taken down because of it?
With the internet, anyone with a webcam and some talent can become a star. With SOPA, Less piracy = less innovation, less creativity, and less content like OJBG. Is that a fair trade?
My roommate and I would constantly notice the ornate exterior of this Georgetown restaurant every time we went for a walk around town. Finally, we decided it was time to make a reservation and find out what the interior looked like. We got all dolled up for a girl’s night out and to little surprise, we discovered that Bodega was precisely the right location for a classy night in D.C. The restaurant is richly decorated in dark tones and decadent wallpapers and the tapas compliment the décor with their bold flavors and interesting combinations. The New Year deserves some adventurous new cuisine, and I suggest you start off with Bodega.
*Tip: The Arroz Meloso al Azafrán con Gambas, or the creamy saffron rice with grilled shrimp tapas plate was our favorite. Perhaps it will be yours too.
It is my personal favorite time of the year because it is AWARD SEASON. With the Golden Globes this Sunday, and the Oscars soon to follow, it’s time to catch up on this year’s best films, television shows, and performances before they announce the winners of those coveted golden statues. My personal favorites for this year include The Help and Midnight in Paris. What were yours?
*Tip: For those teens reading this that will be going to prom in the spring, the best inspiration comes from award shows. Pay attention to the star’s dresses, jewelry, shoes, bags, makeup, and hairstyles. It is way easier to develop your own look with a little inspiration and the award shows can give you HOURS of it.
The New Year
We are already a full two weeks into the New Year. Perhaps it’s the optimist in me, but I think the New Year is the perfect opportunity to reevaluate your life’s course and change some things that may not be beneficial to you and your well being. Whether it’s a change in jobs, a new hobby, revamped eating habits, more exercise, a new haircut, or any other form of change, the time is now for a terrific new year.
PR at Partners Salon and Spa
If your New Year’s resolution is to revamp your look, you should head over to the PR at Partners Salon in Foggy Bottom. I recently visited the salon to correct a botched hair-dye job and I could not have had a more pleasant experience. The hair stylists take the time to discuss with you your concerns, desired look, hair type, and management time before they touch anything. Aside from haircuts and coloring, the salon also does hair removal, facials, and other spa services. There are 14 other locations throughout D.C. and Virginia. This salon and spa also specializes in rejuvenating clients’ entire looks, from their hairstyle to their makeup and clothing through makeup and stylist consultations, perfect for New Year makeovers. For more information, check out their website.
*Tip: Jonathan was my hairstylist at the K Street Salon. He was fabulous, extremely receptive, and most welcoming. He walked me through every step of the process, answered all of my questions, and was full of conversation. Plus, my hair looked excellent when he was finished. I highly recommend him.

#7 OJBG’s upcoming EP
Yes, this is TRUE! I was actually in the recording studio — of the very kind and talented music-guru, Ben Ozeki — just last week. I was there with the lovely Ms. Ellen Winter (aka Sarah Roberts). I am extremely excited. There will be 3 songs on the EP — all tracks written & inspired by tracks composed by Brent Katz, and then performed by members of the cast. There is even a song called “Me, I’m Afraid of Nothing” and it sounds like a Hawaiian/Western. It is my favorite.

#8 Geek Chic, via etsy BongaChopShop
#8 The FACT THAT THIS DRESS EXITS
It is made by “Bonga Chop Shop” (found on etsy). And all hail the New Orleans based designer who makes these charming and adorable finds. I wish I had known about her sooner. The wallets she makes would have made great stocking-stuffers.
I’ve been on a kick lately — watching coming of age movies from Down Under. The above still is from the wonderful movie “Looking for Alibrandi”, which is based on the eponymous book, “Looking for Alibrandi”, written by Melina Marchetta. Marchetta is absolutely amazing. Her book “On the Jellicoe Road” was one of the favorites that I read last year.
(*And PS if you haven’t seen Peter Weir’s “Picnic at Hanging Rock” from ’75 –then I suggest you go see it… run, NOW. It’s a staple of Aussie cinema. And it’s that good.)
And now for some “Honorable Mentions from OZ” :
#9 tomorrow when the war began
The above still is from the movie ‘Tomorrow When the War Began” (which is based off John Marsden’s best-selling book/series of the same name). Some reasons why it is great: Post-Apocalyptic survival story. Bad-Ass female lead. Coming-of-Age element. Lush Scenery. Strong Action Sequences with compelling cinematography.
#9 cont'd: "Puberty Blues"
And of course there is “Puberty Blues”. I know, I know, the name is kind of cringe-worthy. But, don’t be fooled by the slightly-sacharine name. The movie explores the extreme darkness and light of being 13, in the ’79 Sydney suburbs. The movie is (like the others listed in #9) based off a book of the same name. Incidentally, the book created quite a stir when it was published (mainly because the authors were only 18 when it was published, and also because the book was a candid auto-biographical account of their experiences being 13, and dealing with sex, heroin, and surfing).
#9 cont'd more "Puberty Blues"

Washington, DC 20007. Visit the Facebook event for more details! To purchase tickets, head to the Reel Fest D.C. website: http://www.reelfestdc.com/
*Tip: Note the location change in the Facebook event. It would be tragic if you showed up to the wrong place and missed this splendid event.
We have raved about the actual event, but the After-Party is just as important! Right after Reel Fest D.C., head on over to the D.C. Jazz Loft this Sunday night, November 13th, for some sweet tunes, a cool atmosphere, and great conversations with inspiring D.C. natives who love the arts just as much as we do!
*Tip: Check out the Facebook event for all the little details regarding the After-Party.
Who doesn’t like getting stuff for free? OJBG certainly does! Z Burger in Tenleytown is offering its customers a single patty burger 100% free of charge. The offer is available from now until November 18th. Why are you still sitting here reading this? Go get that burger.

It’s okay to give in to the camp tradition of kissing the clock and making a wish at 11:11. Take this once in a lifetime opportunity to make a wish at 11:11 p.m. on 11/11/11.
*Tip: Be careful what you wish for- it may actually come true this time around.
5. The Harry Potter Finale
If you’re like me and enjoy a cozy night in on the couch with Chinese food fresh out of the carton and your best pals next to you every once and awhile, I suggest making a night like this happen this weekend in celebration of the DVD release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Who would give up an opportunity for relaxation, quality time with the pals, and a night to relish in the FINAL CHAPTER OF HARRY POTTER? I certainly would not.
*Tip: Watch Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone first. Your mind will be blown by how young the trio was, how sucky the special effects were, and how incredibly wonderful the series’ beginning still is.
#6 see kimya live at the black cat. minus the bunny suit
#6 Kimya Dawson is playing tonight (11/11/11) at the Black Cat… doors are at 9pm. Check it out, get tickets & info HERE.
It’s been a while since I saw her live…actually it was several years ago, when she and Adam Green were still Moldy Peaches. There was a bunny suit involved & the drinking of (fake/real?) pee on stage. Quite memorable. I also have one of Adam Green’s sweaters. Long story. It was bought from off of his back.
You sick? We’re all sick over here (well most of us anyways). So today’s “Weekend Forecast” will be heavy on the sicky activities.

1. You been to the Toki Underground yet? It’s on H street in NE and it brings Ramen Noodles to new heights. (That broth! All about that broth.) This aint your college years cup o’ noodles Maruchan. Also it has nice cold Asian beers in big bottles to complement your soup. With the early onset of the winter chills, and with a sore sore throat, a cup of warm broth really soothes a wounded soldier. PS Check out more of R Lopez’ photostream here.
#2 You can't stop time, but you can turn it back.
2. Enjoy that EXTRA HOUR of sleep this weekend. That’s right, Daylight Savings Time ENDS…which means at 3am on Sunday Nov. 6, you can go ahead and wind that clock back for another go at 2am to 3am. Anyone remember that EPISODE OF PETE & PETE — the Daylight Savings Episode, whereby they discover that since the *clock* winds back, *time* must ALSO wind back… meaning you can go wild and then get a Do-Over. In LIFE. Yes, it is excellent… so I will hail #3 as…
3. Watch Pete & Pete. especially that episode. (It’s season 2, episode 5…”The Time Tunnel”.) Being sick is a great time to take a metaphorical stroll down memory lane. And if you want more nostalgia, here is the Pete & Pete website, for trolling through. I dare say that the website is even more 90′s than the show is! (for that extra dose of nostalgia.)
Hand me my Riboflavin!

#6 Travel - 3nd Place: Aristide Economopoulos
6. and here is one from the Washington Post… Upstart photography festival FotoWeek DC is kicking off Nov. 4with a giant, two-venue launch party.where: the old Borders bookstore at 18th and L streets NW — a move that will give organizers 50,000 square feet of space to play with, a mere block from the Metro. what: 14 separate exhibitions will be held at the hub, open to the public beginning Nov. 5, including the World Press Photo exhibition, and the FotoWeekDC International Awards Competition winners. The space will also be home to the launch party and to Brightest Young Things’ ‘Young @ Heart’ show. So that brings us to….
#7 BYT Young @ Heart party
7. Brightest Young Things’ “Young @ Heart” show, which features some of the site’s best photos of the year.Another major change this year: You’ll now have to register for a free festival passto visit the three primary FotoWeek spaces, FotoWeek Central, the Corcoran Gallery of Art and FotoSpace in Adams Morgan. No one will be turned away if you don’t pre-register online, but you will still have to register on-site.You’ll also have to get tickets (at anywhere from $10 to $75) for certain festival events, such as Young @ Heart, the popular Night Visions all-night photo shoot and portfolio reviews. But FotoWeek could pick up the tab for a lucky few: Organizers will give away 150 free tickets to fans of the festival’s Facebook page, and 30 of those will be for the Nov. 4 launch party (which saves the lucky winners a whopping $55). “The concept,” says Adamstein, “is for as much as possible to be free.”
Many viewers have had questions about OJBG. “Why do I feel like I’m missing things sometimes? Why are there gaps in the story line between seasons? Why are there new characters, and mysteriously disappearing/reappearing charcacters? Why do you use corded phones?”
Every season is a new summer– and a year passes in between. So Season 1 is the summer of ’94, Season 2 is summer of 95…and a lot of the story line is not just what IS happening…but also is about playing catch up — trying to figure out what happened throughout that passed year. It is a bit like a mystery. I like that when the characters have lives outside of what we see on the screen. It gives them more life and they aren’t always knowable. We have to get to know them.
I chose summer because it is, in many was, the quintessential high school time period. While you are in school, the social order, and the hierarchy are constantly being re-instated daily, because of the pre-ordained and constantly repeating schedule. But during the summer– people change, their schedules change. Sometimes people get thrown into the mix with an unexpected crew. Sometimes people have to go away to their grandmother’s for the summer. Sometimes they have summer school or work and cant hang out like they used to. Sometimes people have camp many states away. Whatever it is– the order is changed — destabilized. And a person’s place, at that age, is uncertain. Their friends, their “standing”, their beliefs, the very structure of their lives — these can all change, becoming re-ordered or dis-ordered. It is in many ways the most fitting representation of that unknown, unknoweable, unsettling age — precisely because it is so unsettled and up-in-the-air.
Also, in terms of characters disappearing and re-appearing… we are a super indie and we don’t have the luxury of 5 year contracts, which is how most TV shows work, and how they are able to guarantee that the actors can stay around for a while. (Ever wonder what happened to Carly Kittredge-McBride?? Yea — me too. I had big plans in store for her, which I had to scrap.) Sometimes our characters/actors just arent available for that season. Sometimes they have moved, sometimes they have job conflicts, sometimes they are college visiting, sometimes they have summer school. Simply put — we have to roll with the punches a lot more. And we hope that you are willing to too.
And as for the corded phones… if you have to ask, the show is set in the 90′s, and you might just be a lost cause.
Blazers. Plaid. Baggy Pants. Florals. We loved them in the 90s and Richard Chai is bringing them to 2012. The up and coming New York designer has revamped some of the familiar trends we flaunted two decades ago and unveiled them to the public during New York’s Fashion Week on Thursday, September 8th.
(Richard Chai; fashiongonerogue.com)
Chai was predominantly a menswear designer until he launched his latest line, Richard Chai- LOVE, in 2009 for women. The line debuts characteristics similar to the themes of his menswear styles, including clean lines and architectural suits. The outfits have been well received by audiences and critics alike.
(Marios Schwab)
Chai joins fellow designer Phillip Lim, who has also previewed grunge-inspired trends in his newest lines, and Marios Schwab, who has taken to reinvigorating the baby doll dresses Alicia Silverstone made us love in Clueless. I have a feeling that the 90s will fall right back into our closets just as easily as Teen Nick fell right back onto our television screens.
Here it is! I’ve received some awesome emails from viewers, who love the soundtrack and want to know more about the music that we feature. Here is info about the bands, the songs, and where you can find their music! Support fellow indie artists!
OJ loves independent artists of all kinds… and one of the things that sets OJBG apart is the music. I really aimed to feature deep cuts, left of the dial, from both the 90′s and now. I feel really strongly that the soundtrack should 100% sound like a well-loved mixtape from one of your besties.
xoxo Otessa
EPISODE 1: the mix
(tracks listed in order of appearance in the episode)
–1– OJ theme song “Midnight Joyride (concentrated)” by Juicy Demise (Ellen Reid & Sara Curtin)
Ellen Reid and Sara Curtin are musicians and composers…what you would call rising, young talent. (: Ellen’s a complete genius– and so is her fellow songwriter & collaborator Sara Curtin. Together, Ellen & Sara created “Midnight Joyride (concentrated)”. Thus Juicy Demise was born… and so was our OJ theme song!
Sara Curtin is in a band called The Sweater Set. Their album “Surprise Visit” is on sale now, for more information go to www.Thesweaterset.com
Check out Ellen Reid’s webpage: www.ellenreid.org . To hear more of Ellen’s music for film…check out her fierce soundtrack for the “Love, Stargirl” trailer. (The book video trailer, for Jerry Spinelli’s “Love Stargirl”, is where I first got to work with Ellen.) Watch it here:
[Stargirl Book Video Trailer]Stargirl Book Video Trailerhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMoXMhql0L0
PS (To take a stroll down memory lane, in my very first email to Ellen, here is how I described my “dream track”… & the look and feel of the soon-to-be OJ theme song: “It should reference “orange juice” or say the word “orange juice” at some point. (A little weird, I know-but OJ is a major diegetic metaphor/slang ref. of this teen world.) Songs like Beck’s “Sleeping Bag” or the band Orange Juice’s “Breakfast Time”. Weird and magical stuff.
Songs that are major inspirations to me on this series are anything off of Pavement’s album “Wowee Zowee”. And stuff with the lo-fi 90′s aesthetic (bands like black tambourine, strapping fieldhands, the licorice roots.). If I had to describe how I hear it in my head…it’s like a summer anthem, (albeit a slightly unusual one)–its like THE song you play on your tape deck ALL summer when you’re 16. Summer-ey, catchy & upbeat, but also with kind of weirdly lethargic/slackery moments.”
I think Ellen and Sara hit it out of the park (:
+++++++++++++++++++++
–2– “In the Hall of the Mountain King” by Edvard Grieg
Reminds me of DC childhoods lolling on the lawn at Wolftrap. Such an epic classical score! And I guess you can file it under “great music to buy or sell underage liquor to”
just look at this guy-- epic. seriously epic.
+++++++++++++++++++++
–3– “Polo” by Brent Katz, Brent Katz is a terrific musician and a terrific friend! He composed this song especially for another film that I made in film school called, “Marco Polo”. The song is so good though that we just had to use it in Orange Juice in Bishop’s Garden too. It really gives an aura of mystery & magic to that first entry in Bishop’s Garden. Brent is super talented and also is the best person too, so I want to give him a shout out! He was/is the drummer for the NYC band “The Harlem Shakes” (www.harlemshakes.com), who have a bunch of great albums and are on Gigantic records.
Also– keep an eye out for Brent’s very first solo album! It is called “Kangaroo Court” and will be coming out SOON SOON SOON!
+++++++++++++++++++++ –4– “Boo Hoo Hoo” by The Strapping Fieldhands, a lo-fi fave of mine and a jewel in the crown of 90′s independent music. Love that zany love-in-the-cotswolds feel. and the fuzz-rock feel is like an amazing long-loved & well-worn cardigan sweater. you just want to wrap yourself up in this song!
PS It cracks me up every time (at the end of Ep1, in that wood-paneled Volvo) when it becomes Beth VS. Rox+Adrian… and Boo Hoo Hoo is a great battleground.
