  • #1  Happy Birthday to you, David Bowie.

Bowie’s b’day was yesterday, fyi.  And the thin white duke has the distinct honor of being 1 of 300 people, to decline HRH, the Queen’s offer of knighthood. In Ashley’s words: “How rock & roll of him”.

  •  #7 OJBG’s upcoming EP

Yes, this is TRUE!   I was actually in the recording studio — of the very kind and talented music-guru, Ben Ozeki — just last week.  I was there with the lovely Ms. Ellen Winter (aka Sarah Roberts).  I am extremely excited. There will be 3 songs on the EP — all tracks written & inspired by tracks composed by Brent Katz, and then performed by members of the cast. There is even a song called “Me, I’m Afraid of Nothing” and it sounds like a Hawaiian/Western. It is my favorite.

It is made by “Bonga Chop Shop” (found on etsy). And all hail the New Orleans based designer who makes these charming and adorable finds. I wish I had known about her sooner. The wallets she makes would have made great stocking-stuffers.

Check out the etsy shop HERE.

#9, Looking for Alibrandi

  • #9 MOVIES FROM OZ

I’ve been on a kick lately — watching coming of age movies from Down Under. The above still is from the wonderful movie “Looking for Alibrandi”, which is based on the eponymous book, “Looking for Alibrandi”, written by Melina Marchetta. Marchetta is absolutely amazing. Her book “On the Jellicoe Road” was  one of the favorites that I read last year.

(*And PS if you haven’t seen Peter Weir’s “Picnic at Hanging Rock” from ’75 –then I suggest you go see it… run, NOW. It’s a staple of Aussie cinema. And it’s that good.)

And now for some “Honorable Mentions from OZ” :

#9 tomorrow when the war began

The above still is from the movie  ‘Tomorrow When the War Began” (which is based off John Marsden’s best-selling book/series of the same name).  Some reasons why it is great:  Post-Apocalyptic survival story. Bad-Ass female lead. Coming-of-Age element.  Lush Scenery. Strong Action Sequences with compelling cinematography.

#9 cont'd: "Puberty Blues"

And of course there is “Puberty Blues”.  I know, I know, the name is kind of cringe-worthy. But, don’t be fooled by the slightly-sacharine name. The movie  explores the extreme darkness and light of being 13, in the ’79 Sydney suburbs.  The movie is (like the others listed in #9) based off a book of the same name. Incidentally, the book created quite a stir when it was published (mainly because the authors were only 18 when it was published, and also because the book was a candid auto-biographical account of their experiences being 13, and dealing with sex, heroin, and surfing).

#9 cont'd more "Puberty Blues"

Rare Pic for the Day — Spotlight on Malick’s “New World” & Q’orianka Kilcher

I just love Terrence Malick’s films.  Apparently Malick once told his DP, “imagine your camera is the bird in the moment before it takes flight”. And right there, lies all my admiration and awe… To be a director with such a poetic mind.

Q'orianka Kilcher as Pocahontas in Malick's "New World"

And Q’orianka Kilcher gave a tremendous, nuanced performance as Pocahontas. (and she was only 14!) And kudos to Malick & the production team for keeping the love story from ever seeming creepy, which it so easily could have.

Apparenly Q’orianka is now a recurring character on “Sons of Anarchy”, which makes me really regret letting that show fall by the wayside. Now I need to catch up on my viewing.

Video Games – Lana Del Rey -

September 2nd, 2011 by Otessa · 20something, Blog, music, OJBG, Otessa, otessa ghadar, teen things, Uncategorized

Lana Del Rey (also known as Lizzy Grant) has been much discussed on the blogosphere…so much so that I almost doubted whether it was worth adding to the blog-chatter. But, in case you haven’t heard this track before, I would like to recommend it. It has a lush soundscape with gutting, soulful vocals and nearing-on-full-on orchestral string arrangements.
It’s unusually long in that it takes its time and doesn’t break down into the standard changes of a musical arrangement — all of which seem bold choices. (or choices of a naive savant. but who knows and who cares?)

The song speaks of a sadness you can revel in… a sadness you could swaddle yourself up in like a blanket and protect yourself with…
Lana/Lizzy describes her music as “Hollywood Sad Core” and she describes herself as a “gansta Nancy Sinatra”. For someone with so much talent, these descriptions are almost cringe-inducing…and it’s a shame. I want to call her and say, “Please ‘take it back!’ You’re better than these.”
And besides, I’ve always been a Dusty Springfield girl over a Nancy Sinatra girl. The longing in Dusty’s voice could have tugged & pulled the world off its axis.

The single drops stateside October 9th. Until then you can watch the video for the track here to get your fix:

Creepy Gold Stars

May 5th, 2010 by The OJBG Team · 20something, Bishop's Garden, Blog, grunge, teen things, Uncategorized, webseries

Admit it.

Throughout highschool, maybe middle school even, you, at one point or another, had a crush on a teacher. Looking back, the reasoning, older, version of yourself can say with certainty that no, your balding, love handle flaunting, “crush” was perhaps not the looker you once believed them to be.  But regardless of that logic, you still maintain a certain lilt in your voice when you speak of them years later.

Well guess what: stop that! And this is why, since the February 18, 2010 (yes 3 months ago) there have been at least 7 reports of student molestation by teachers. This is sickening. This is creepy. And this is happening across America at an alarming rate.

Girls, your weird science teacher who offers to rub your shoulders while you stay after class is creepy: extremely creepy. Guys, no offense, but does it really make sense that your 30 yr old teacher is flirting with you? Sure, we get that you’re manly- but c’mon, there’s just something wrong with that situation…

And when Orange Juice in Bishops Garden discusses this, portraying the weird teacher who inappropriately flirts with students and socializes with them outside of school- OJBG is dealing with a real issue. In fact they’re dealing with several real issues.

1. The student/teacher relationship boundaries.

2. The implication of these relationships: potential for jail.

3. The need for students to know their rights.

Unfortunately, we understand how confusing and scary all of these points are. And, we understand that the automatic teen ‘truth’ is the one that is most likely to help avoid grounding and revoked priviledges. And, we also understand that you may not be in a position where you know, the boundaries, the implications, or your rights.

So here are some guidelines: If you think it’s weird- it probably is. If you’re in any way creeped out by their behavior- then their behavior is probably creepy. If they are invading your bubble- (not the one you put away while freaking at Homecoming)- they’re completely wrong. If you have ANY question about whether or not what they’re doing is ok, then it probably isn’t. No gold star is worth your being harassed.

Welcome to Orange Juice in Bishop's Garden

April 15th, 2009 by The OJBG Team · Blog, Uncategorized

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CxfYqOn_CA]

So you want to know about OJ?  Well you came to the right blog! OJ aka Orange Juice in Bishop’s Garden as you might have heard is a “is a fiercely local & indie web-series, set in D.C. about the lives of a group of teenagers in the summer 1994,” yep that’s us! OJ is full of life at its highest and lowest moments. So when life gives us lemons, we make lemonade.

randompics2

Episode one introduces you to the characters of OJ.  We see bffffffffs! Kris and Sarah light the way for much more to come.  This episode unfolds the tensions between Maggie and Sarah “best friends” who dig the same guy. With Sarah as the people pleaser and Maggie as the drama queen there’s bound to be either a cat fight or a back stab just waiting to happen.

ojbglogo

Not to mention there’s no pressure to get beer for the gang when the Pakistani couple puts their eight year old in front of the counter! WHAO! This is pretty extreme. Kris and Sarah take one for the team.
We also say “Hello” to Roxanne and Beth. Roxanne is a total babe while Beth on the other hand is a little bit awkward and a lot of bit jealous of her “perfect” sister Hunter.  While getting a ride from Ms. Perfect Roxanne and Beth encounter Adrian. A totally hot and off limits friend of Hunter’s! Oh, dear what are they to do?!  Well flirt of course!

2020productions-3org

Well they kind of have to in Maggie’s case after a few shot guns! Then Ryan with his “pasiffical” piss, and the clock striking 12, curfew coming soon, and Maggie shot gunning with Jake, it seems pretty clear how the night is to unfold.

2020productionsorg2
But! Jake takes a leak on Ryan and well that doesn’t go over too well. Not only is Ryan pissed, Maggie is completely disgusted, leaving an open doorway for Sarah. Out with Jake… in with Trip, Maggie just wants what she wants.
Flashing lights, and a siren!  Oh boy we’re in trouble now!!! The Pigs have come out to play have they? Well then let’s play a game shall we? But first we need all the members of our team? Where the hell are Jake and Trip?! Roxanne and Beth end up in the car with sexy Adrian again, and Travis has fun with a paper bag… They all say farewell and Jake ends up walking Sarah home leaving it all up to you for tonight’s plans, so “Will you be there tonight?”
