Top 5 Fictional TV Bands

A super-sneak peak from later in the season with Sarah's 'yet to be-named' band!

By: Emily

So far in Season 5 we’ve got: Sarah and Gwen in a LDR, Davis ‘switching teams’ at camp, a budding romance between Robin and Tamsin…and Sarah holding auditions for the teenage essential: a garage band. There’ll be more on Sarah’s yet-to-be-named band later in this season but until then, here are my all-time Top 5 Made-For-TV Bands:

5) My So-Called Life – Frozen Embryos
The quintessential 90′s grunge TV show: My So-Called Life. Alas, Jordan Catalano’s band Frozen Embryos didn’t get much screen time since the series was cancelled– but we did get to see dreamy Jared Letto singing “I Wanna Be Sedated.”
4) Freaks and Geeks – Creation

Jason Segal on drums, James Franco on guitar, and Seth Rogan on vocals = a total supergroup. Freaks and Geeks is another one of those cancelled-too-soon, intense cult-following TV shows and is pure 80′s teenage magic. The tentatively named ‘Creation’ also had another teenage band essential: Groupies.

3) Fraggle Rock -Fraggle Rock
Ok, I don’t know if this counts as a band– but Fraggle Rock was awesome. It’s a live-action puppet musical television show.  And they had albums, so it totally counts. The theme song give clear instructions to dance your cares away, and let the music play.
2) Gilmore Girls – Hep Alien
Lane Kim’s band Hep Alien was the bomb (especially back when Adam Brody was on Gilmore Girls before ditching for The O.C.) Sebastian Bach of Skid Row actually replaces him in the band as guitarist later in the series. Also, the soundtrack for that show was always very alt. and they had great guest appearances from The Sonic Youth, The Shins and The Bangles.
1) Doug – The Beets
The Beets are probably the greatest fictional band of all time. Doug and Skeeter are huge fan’s of the band who hail from ‘Liverpool’….Try listening to Killer Tofu without singing “Ah Ee Oohhh, Killer Tofuuu! Ee Ah Ee.” All. Day. Long.

OJBG’s Weekend Walk-In’s

1. George Washington University’s “Rocky Horror Picture Show”

The cult classic, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” has taken over Washington, D.C. just in time for Halloween. With performances tonight and tomorrow night at the George Washington University Marvin Center 3rd floor Grand Ballroom, you can rest assured that you will be completely prepared for Halloween Sunday night. The show boasts the traditional film projected behind the actors and encourages audience call-lines, but also provides a modern twist on the cult ritual with racier costumes and the authentic GW “Virgin Games” 15 minutes before the show starts which are designed to get the audience’s blood flowing. Trust me, your blood will definitely be flowing. The show’s motto is after all: Give yourself over to absolute pleasure.

*Tip: Get there at least an hour early. This production is not only widely-known throughout D.C., but it is one of the biggest traditions at the university for GW students, so anticipate crowds.

2. Trick-or-Treating at the Embassies

One of the wonders of D.C. is Embassy Row. You can walk on the property of many different countries without ever having to board a plane and leave the District. However, the Embassies are especially fun on Halloween when each of the individual buildings open their doors to Trick-Or-Treaters and send them off with tasty treats (and sometimes even items unique to that individual country).  You can even get a sneak peak into the Embassies when they open the door. Candy and an inside look? In the words of Charlie Sheen: winning.

*Tip: Don’t be lame and wear a costume. Seriously, being 40 does not excuse you from having to make a complete fool of yourself on Halloween. Start at the Embassies around 3 p.m., if not earlier, since some Embassies stop answering their door around 5 p.m. Also, some Embassies do not give out goodies. Here is a list of the ones that definitely participate in the festivities:

The Republic of Cape Verde

The Republic of Cote d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast)

The Republic of Croatia

Finland

Greece

The Vatican or Apostolic Nunciature, the Holy Sea

The Republic of Indonesia

Ireland

The Republic of Korea

Lesotho

The Republic of the Marshall Islands

Paraguay

3. The Crime and Punishment Museum

Every Halloween, the Crime and Punishment Museum plans a theatrical and themed week of events for its visitors. This year, the museum has centered its week on the Electric Chair that is housed within the museum. Little is known about what actually will happen once you step foot inside the museum on the nights of the Halloween-themed events, which makes the entire night all the more terrifying. Just don’t pee your pants. That would be embarrassing.

*Tip: No person under the age of 17 will be allowed admittance, so leave the little ones at home with a babysitter. Tickets can be purchased on their website.

4. An Ouija Board

Some of my fondest memories of the days before Halloween include a Ouija board. Get a group of pals over to your place, shut off all the lights, and present your questions to the all-knowing glow-in-the-dark Ouija board. No matter how old you are, it’s almost impossible not to get a little freaked out by the board’s messages, even if they are completely absurd.

A special note from OJBG creator, Otessa: The Meatpuppets are playing at the Rock & Roll Hotel this coming Tuesday, Nov 1st. Finish off Halloween weekend with a bang, literally, on the drums.

Boy Meets a Different World: Where The Cast of Boy Meets World and Other Memorable TV Show Actors Are Today

October 25th, 2011 by The OJBG Team · 20something, 90's, behind the scenes, Blog, film, New Media, Film, TV, Video, Web, teen, teen things

Every week when I have to think up a new topic for a blog post, I find myself reminiscing about my own childhood during the (very) late 90s. More often than not, I quickly end up spending way too much time rewatching YouTube videos of my personal favorite 90s TV show episodes. After I’ve had my 90s TV show fix, I start to wonder: What ever happened to these quirky teens we grew up with? Well, for all of you who ask this same question, I now have the answers:

Ben Savage played the adorable Cory Matthews on Boy Meets World. After the show ended, he graduated from Stanford University. Smarty pants. He has done some guest stints on other television shows and had a couple of roles in pretty much non-existent movies. Hey, at least he’s an intelligent lad.

Danielle Fishel, the beautiful Topanga Lawrence on Boy Meets World, ended up becoming a spokeswoman for Nutrisystem and hosts a show called “The Dish” on the Style Network.

William Daniels, the unforgettable Mr. Feeney on Boy Meets World, is, in-fact, still kicking at 82 years old. I think that’s an accomplishment in itself.

Melissa Joan Hart, the spell-bounding Sabrina the Teenage Witch, currently stars on another ABC Family sitcom, Melissa and Joey, starring fellow 90s star, Joey Lawrence. She also competed on a season of Dancing With The Stars. She is a mommy of two boys and has an extremely sexy husband, if I do say so myself.

Candace Cameron, the bright-eyed D.J. Tanner on Full House, also stuck with ABC Family and acts on it’s gymnastics oriented television show, Make It Or Break It. She also got married to a hockey player and has three kiddies.

Blog Crush — Teenage Bedroom

September 28th, 2011 by Otessa · 20something, 90's, Blog, grunge, Otessa, otessa ghadar, teen, teen things, Uncategorized

Oh wow…so my sister Anna (who is awesome and who has also been on my show “Orange Juice in Bishop’s Garden”…she was the little boy behind the liquor store counter in season 1, episode 1. Good grief. The things I do to my family!)

…Anyways, she shared this blog with me recently: teenagebedroom.tumblr.com/

my favorite pic from the first 19 pages of the site

It is a tribute to everything wild, wonderful, weird, & slovenly about being a teenager — and that age & time when personal space and privacy are rare and at a premium; so, those spaces that ARE ours…they become a gold standard for personal expression.

19 yo colorado college student's dorm rom = awesome

Love it.

PS It also gives serious inspiration for any set dressing, or personal home-scaping plans.

Here are some highlights:

awesome “speciman” of 90s bedroom. this one hails from 1995. makes me laugh + swoon.

High School Intern Edition: Honesty is the Best Policy

February 8th, 2011 by The OJBG Team · 90's, Bishop's Garden, DC, teen things

By: Ally Bailey

Have you ever read Prep, by Curtis Sittenfeld?  If you haven’t, you should.  I can’t think of a more honest piece of writing centered around the high school years, and it strikes an even greater chord with those of us that have gone to private school.  But the reason I love Prep, the reason I think it is one of the best books of the 2000s decade, is because it screams the truth.  Within the pages, you can taste high school.  You can embrace the awkwardness and ride the highs.  So when I was asked to write about my favorite OJIBG episode, I immediately knew which one I was going to write about, because it would be the one that spoke with the most verity.

Like most television shows that I like, I can’t get over the first season.  I keep re -watching and re- playing them because I’m so fascinated by how the show first reeled me in, why I kept pressing ‘Play’ on my computer even though it was 3 a.m.  and I had to go to school the next morning.  So my favorite episode from the archives of OJIBG is ‘Misery in Mcmansions’ from Season 1.  It’s the episode I see as the catalyst for the rest of the season’s plot (I could spoil what happens, but if you haven’t seen it I won’t ruin its sinful mysteriousness). But more importantly, it tells the truth.  It lays out for its audience the hells and angst and grit of being a teenager in a way that almost palpably rings with honesty.  There is something about this age, this uncharted territory between the playpen and the workplace, that fosters incredible creativity and wonder. And I think, out of all the OJIBG episodes, that this one captures a pristine glimmer of that state. We watch Orange Juice in Bishop’s Garden because it’s cool, and it’s fun, but also because it’s just plain real.  We wouldn’t watch it if it gave us a sterilize and censored version of what we knew to be true.
