2. The Reel Fest D.C. After-Party

We have raved about the actual event, but the After-Party is just as important! Right after Reel Fest D.C., head on over to the D.C. Jazz Loft this Sunday night, November 13th,  for some sweet tunes, a cool atmosphere, and great conversations with inspiring D.C. natives who love the arts just as much as we do!

*Tip: Check out the Facebook event for all the little details regarding the After-Party.

3. Free Burger at Z Burger

Who doesn’t like getting stuff for free? OJBG certainly does! Z Burger in Tenleytown is offering its customers a single patty burger 100% free of charge. The offer is available from now until November 18th.  Why are you still sitting here reading this? Go get that burger.

*Tip: OJBG heard of this deal through ScoutMob. Download the app to your smart device and easily stay informed about all of the hot deals circulating D.C. every day.

4.  Make a wish! It’s 11/11/11.

It’s okay to give in to the camp tradition of kissing the clock and making a wish at 11:11. Take this once in a lifetime opportunity to make a wish at 11:11 p.m. on 11/11/11.

*Tip: Be careful what you wish for- it may actually come true this time around.

5. The Harry Potter Finale

If you’re like me and enjoy a cozy night in on the couch with Chinese food fresh out of the carton and your best pals next to you every once and awhile, I suggest making a night like this happen this weekend in celebration of the DVD release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Who would give up an opportunity for relaxation, quality time with the pals, and a night to relish in the FINAL CHAPTER OF HARRY POTTER? I certainly would not.

*Tip: Watch Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone first. Your mind will be blown by how young the trio was, how sucky the special effects were, and how incredibly wonderful the series’ beginning still is.

#6 see kimya live at the black cat. minus the bunny suit

#6   Kimya Dawson is playing tonight (11/11/11) at the Black Cat… doors are at 9pm. Check it out, get tickets & info HERE.

It’s been a while since I saw her live…actually it was several years ago, when she and Adam Green were still Moldy Peaches. There was a bunny suit involved & the drinking of (fake/real?) pee on stage. Quite memorable. I also have one of Adam Green’s sweaters. Long story. It was bought from off of his back.

Women in film. We digg it.

April 28th, 2010 by The OJBG Team · Bishop's Garden, Blog, Women In Film

There are lots of great female head honchos in Hollywood but these 10 talented women have been named the “Top Ten Women Directors in Hollywood”.  (This list is still missing tons of amazing and important filmmakers, but it’s still worth giving a shout to these talented ladies).  So, in no particular order, here are:

10. Nora Ephron.  Okay, OK, so I’m definitely NOT a big “When Harry Met Sally” fan… (I know, people get mas when I say this).  But you got to give it to her for being so prolific and successful in a tough industry. Ephron began as a screen writer, becoming known for “When Harry Met Sally” and “Silkwood”. Her directing career became sucessful with “Sleepless in Seattle” (1993); “You’ve Got Mail” (1998); “Lucky Numbers” (2000); “Bewitched” (2005″ and her most recent film “Julie & Julia” (2009)

9. Nancy Meyers is another writer turned producer starting with the writing of “Private Benjamin” and “Baby Boom”. Her direting carrer has been a huge success begining with the widely loved “The Parent Trap” (1998). She also wrote and directed the beloved “Something’s Gotta Give” (2003). She then filmed the first Hollywood Romantic to star a 60 year old; “It’s Complicated” (2009)

8. Nicole Holofcener is widely known for her “Walking and Talking” (1990); “Lovely and Amazing” (2001) and “Friends with Money” (2006)

7. Catherine Hardwicke focuses on teen films such as her widely favored film “Thirteen” (2003) and not to mention the first “Twilight” (2008).  She actually started out doing tons  of production design– like 90′s fave film ‘Tank Girl”.  You can definitely see her aesthetic attention to production design remain true now, with the lush & gorgeous set she featured as the Director of “Twilight”.

6. Mira Nair is known for “Vanity Fair” (2004) as well as “Monsoon Wedding” (2001) and “The Namesake” (2007)

9. Julie Taymor began as a stage directory; winning a Tony for “The Lion King”. One of her most memorable films is Shakespeare’s “Titus” (1999) and the lovely and trippy “Across the Universe”.

4. Jane Campion was the second woman to be nominated for the Best Director Oscar for “The Piano” (1993). She is known for her portrayls of non-mainstream women of all eras. Such as “Portrait of a Lady” (1996); “Holy Smoke” (1999) and the most recent “Bright Star” (2009)

3. Sofia Coppola was also nominated for the Best Director Oscar for her film “Lost in Translation” (2003).  She is also well known for her films “The Virgin Suicides” (2000) and the unorthodoxed “Marie Antoniette” (2006)

2. Amy Heckerling is known for her film “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” (1982) and her remake of Jane Austen’s “Emma” aka”Clueless” (1995)

1. Kathryn Bigelow is the first woman to win the Best Director Oscar – for her film “The Hurt Locker” (2009). She began her career by crossing the line only men usually did with her vampire film “Near Dark” (1987). She then showed her love for action with “Point Break” (1991) and gained her reputation for being technically sophisticated with “Strange Days” (1995)

Doin’ it. Props to Kathryn Bigelow for winning in a man’s world.

April 28th, 2010 by The OJBG Team · Bishop's Garden, Blog, Women In Film

Kathryn Bigelow was the FIRST woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director for “The Hurt Locker”. Really, just now? Don’t get us wrong, we’re all for letting the best (wo)man win but surely there’s something to be said about it happening just this year.

Bigelow’s career began with her first short short film in 1978, “The Set-Up”. Bigelow was the 4th woman to be nominated for Best Director Award, the 2nd Female American director.

“I’ve spent a fair amount of time thinking about what my aptitude is, and I really think it’s to explore and push the medium. It’s not about breaking gender roles or genre traditions.” – Kathryn Bigelow

Welcome to Orange Juice in Bishop's Garden

April 15th, 2009 by The OJBG Team · Blog, Uncategorized

So you want to know about OJ?  Well you came to the right blog! OJ aka Orange Juice in Bishop’s Garden as you might have heard is a “is a fiercely local & indie web-series, set in D.C. about the lives of a group of teenagers in the summer 1994,” yep that’s us! OJ is full of life at its highest and lowest moments. So when life gives us lemons, we make lemonade.

Episode one introduces you to the characters of OJ.  We see bffffffffs! Kris and Sarah light the way for much more to come.  This episode unfolds the tensions between Maggie and Sarah “best friends” who dig the same guy. With Sarah as the people pleaser and Maggie as the drama queen there’s bound to be either a cat fight or a back stab just waiting to happen.

Not to mention there’s no pressure to get beer for the gang when the Pakistani couple puts their eight year old in front of the counter! WHAO! This is pretty extreme. Kris and Sarah take one for the team.
We also say “Hello” to Roxanne and Beth. Roxanne is a total babe while Beth on the other hand is a little bit awkward and a lot of bit jealous of her “perfect” sister Hunter.  While getting a ride from Ms. Perfect Roxanne and Beth encounter Adrian. A totally hot and off limits friend of Hunter’s! Oh, dear what are they to do?!  Well flirt of course!

Well they kind of have to in Maggie’s case after a few shot guns! Then Ryan with his “pasiffical” piss, and the clock striking 12, curfew coming soon, and Maggie shot gunning with Jake, it seems pretty clear how the night is to unfold.

But! Jake takes a leak on Ryan and well that doesn’t go over too well. Not only is Ryan pissed, Maggie is completely disgusted, leaving an open doorway for Sarah. Out with Jake… in with Trip, Maggie just wants what she wants.
Flashing lights, and a siren!  Oh boy we’re in trouble now!!! The Pigs have come out to play have they? Well then let’s play a game shall we? But first we need all the members of our team? Where the hell are Jake and Trip?! Roxanne and Beth end up in the car with sexy Adrian again, and Travis has fun with a paper bag… They all say farewell and Jake ends up walking Sarah home leaving it all up to you for tonight’s plans, so “Will you be there tonight?”
