Twin Sister at the Rock and Roll Hotel

January 25th, 2012 by The OJBG Team · Blog, DC, Events, fashion, grunge, music

By: Emily White

An over-sized white sweater has never looked so good. On Monday night at the Rock and Roll Hotel, Twin Sister took the stage and entranced the audience with their shimmering art-pop. The band drifted to and dabbled in disco, dream-pop, funk, freak-folk, and synth-rock– never settling on a distinguishable sound. But lead singer, Andrea Estella was the literal  ’star’

From the minute she took the stage, Estella was mesmerizingly odd. She swayed and eyed the audience coyly, thanking them for bringing her out of a daze as she simultaneously placed them into one. She reminded me of an anime character, both sweet and slightly deranged with comically dazed facial expressions and girlish movements. Her black eyes were in striking contrast to her long, fried, bleach-blond hair and all-white outfit.

Something about Estella made me feel both uneasy and at peace– like falling into a psychedelic day-dream. Twirling in  her long pleated skirt and playing with her sweater, she cooed through the show. She continually crouched down in her ankle boots in-between sets to take a sip from her Guinness. She is undoubtedly on her way to becoming the next indie darling.

Estella’s odd stage presence paired with the shimmering disco beats, sexy vocals, and a twinkling soundscape left me feeling woozy and enchanted. Definitely check out the bands first full-length album, Heaven. And listen to some of their addictive songs here:

The 90′s

As a frequent Metro customer, I am always overhearing conversation. One reoccurring topic among the older generation tends to be about how things were different when they were growing up. Their stories tend to start with the phrase “Back in my day” and then they go on to recollect about life in the 40′s, 50′s, 60′s etc. But, I cannot venture that far into the past, so I will reminisce on what i remember growing up in the 90′s.

People rented VHS’s not DVD’s.
Rugrats, Hey Arnold and Doug were among the most popular cartoons.
Gas cost approximately $1.16 in 1995.
Kickball was the game of choice.
You used a walkman to listen to music.
$4.23 was the average price of a movie ticket.
It was cool to have shoes that lit up.
Road Rules was a big hit on MTV.
Bill Clinton was President.
You did not have a cellphone, but a pager.
Children had a digital Tamagotchi pet.

…These are just a few of the things I recall whilst thinking about my childhood.

Blog Crush — Teenage Bedroom

September 28th, 2011 by Otessa · 20something, 90's, Blog, grunge, Otessa, otessa ghadar, teen, teen things, Uncategorized

Oh wow…so my sister Anna (who is awesome and who has also been on my show “Orange Juice in Bishop’s Garden”…she was the little boy behind the liquor store counter in season 1, episode 1. Good grief. The things I do to my family!)

…Anyways, she shared this blog with me recently: teenagebedroom.tumblr.com/

my favorite pic from the first 19 pages of the site

It is a tribute to everything wild, wonderful, weird, & slovenly about being a teenager — and that age & time when personal space and privacy are rare and at a premium; so, those spaces that ARE ours…they become a gold standard for personal expression.

19 yo colorado college student's dorm rom = awesome

Love it.

PS It also gives serious inspiration for any set dressing, or personal home-scaping plans.

Here are some highlights:

awesome “speciman” of 90s bedroom. this one hails from 1995. makes me laugh + swoon.

Grunge is a Go: Richard Chai Features the 90s for Spring 2012

September 9th, 2011 by The OJBG Team · 90's, fashion, grunge

By: Samantha

(Richard Chai; fashiongonerogue.com)

Blazers. Plaid. Baggy Pants. Florals. We loved them in the 90s and Richard Chai is bringing them to 2012. The up and coming New York designer has revamped some of the familiar trends we flaunted two decades ago and unveiled them to the public during New York’s Fashion Week on Thursday, September 8th.

(Richard Chai; fashiongonerogue.com)

Chai was predominantly a menswear designer until he launched his latest line, Richard Chai- LOVE, in 2009 for women. The line debuts characteristics similar to the themes of his menswear styles, including clean lines and architectural suits. The outfits have been well received by audiences and critics alike.

(Marios Schwab)

Chai joins fellow designer Phillip Lim, who has also previewed grunge-inspired trends in his newest lines, and Marios Schwab, who has taken to reinvigorating the baby doll dresses Alicia Silverstone made us love in Clueless. I have a feeling that the 90s will fall right back into our closets just as easily as Teen Nick fell right back onto our television screens.

Music We <3 — Season 1, Ep1 Mix-tape

September 6th, 2011 by Otessa · behind the scenes, DC, grunge, music, OJBG, OJBG mixtape, Otessa, Uncategorized

Here it is! I’ve received some awesome emails from viewers, who love the soundtrack and want to know more about the music that we feature. Here is info about the bands, the songs, and where you can find their music! Support fellow indie artists!

OJ loves independent artists of all kinds… and one of the things that sets OJBG apart is the music. I really aimed to feature deep cuts, left of the dial, from both the 90′s and now. I feel really strongly that the soundtrack should 100% sound like a well-loved mixtape from one of your besties.

xoxo Otessa

EPISODE 1: the mix

(tracks listed in order of appearance in the episode)

–1– OJ theme song “Midnight Joyride (concentrated)” by Juicy Demise (Ellen Reid & Sara Curtin)

Ellen Reid and Sara Curtin are musicians and composers…what you would call rising, young talent. (: Ellen’s a complete genius– and so is her fellow songwriter & collaborator Sara Curtin. Together, Ellen & Sara created “Midnight Joyride (concentrated)”. Thus Juicy Demise was born… and so was our OJ theme song!

Sara Curtin is in a band called The Sweater Set. Their album “Surprise Visit” is on sale now, for more information go to www.Thesweaterset.com

Check out Ellen Reid’s webpage: www.ellenreid.org . To hear more of Ellen’s music for film…check out her fierce soundtrack for the “Love, Stargirl” trailer. (The book video trailer, for Jerry Spinelli’s “Love Stargirl”, is where I first got to work with Ellen.) Watch it here:

[Stargirl Book Video Trailer]Stargirl Book Video Trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMoXMhql0L0
PS (To take a stroll down memory lane, in my very first email to Ellen, here is how I described my “dream track”… & the look and feel of the soon-to-be OJ theme song:
“It should reference “orange juice” or say the word “orange juice” at some point. (A little weird, I know-but OJ is a major diegetic metaphor/slang ref. of this teen world.) Songs like Beck’s “Sleeping Bag” or the band Orange Juice’s “Breakfast Time”. Weird and magical stuff.
Songs that are major inspirations to me on this series are anything off of Pavement’s album “Wowee Zowee”. And stuff with the lo-fi 90′s aesthetic (bands like black tambourine, strapping fieldhands, the licorice roots.). If I had to describe how I hear it in my head…it’s like a summer anthem, (albeit a slightly unusual one)–its like THE song you play on your tape deck ALL summer when you’re 16. Summer-ey, catchy & upbeat, but also with kind of weirdly lethargic/slackery moments.”

I think Ellen and Sara hit it out of the park (:
+++++++++++++++++++++

–2– “In the Hall of the Mountain King” by Edvard Grieg
Reminds me of DC childhoods lolling on the lawn at Wolftrap. Such an epic classical score! And I guess you can file it under “great music to buy or sell underage liquor to”

just look at this guy-- epic. seriously epic.

+++++++++++++++++++++

–3– “Polo” by Brent Katz,
Brent Katz is a terrific musician and a terrific friend! He composed this song especially for another film that I made in film school called, “Marco Polo”. The song is so good though that we just had to use it in Orange Juice in Bishop’s Garden too. It really gives an aura of mystery & magic to that first entry in Bishop’s Garden. Brent is super talented and also is the best person too, so I want to give him a shout out! He was/is the drummer for the NYC band “The Harlem Shakes” (www.harlemshakes.com), who have a bunch of great albums and are on Gigantic records.
Also– keep an eye out for Brent’s very first solo album! It is called “Kangaroo Court” and will be coming out SOON SOON SOON!

+++++++++++++++++++++

–4– “Boo Hoo Hoo” by The Strapping Fieldhands,
a lo-fi fave of mine and a jewel in the crown of 90′s independent music. Love that zany love-in-the-cotswolds feel. and the fuzz-rock feel is like an amazing long-loved & well-worn cardigan sweater. you just want to wrap yourself up in this song!

check out more at their website: www.strappingfieldhands.com

PS It cracks me up every time (at the end of Ep1, in that wood-paneled Volvo) when it becomes Beth VS. Rox+Adrian… and Boo Hoo Hoo is a great battleground.

Yes to Yuck: 90′s Revival Music

June 17th, 2011 by The OJBG Team · 90's, Blog, grunge, music, Uncategorized

Yuck’s self-titled debut on Fat Possum Records sounds like something you’d hear on college radio circa ’95: fuzzy guitars, reverberated vocals, and an overall lo-fi hum. The London foursome’s catchy melodies, simple lyrics and steady rhythms are reminiscent of Strapping Fieldhands’ “Boo Hoo Hoo”- a track featured in the very first episode of OJBG! If you like the 90′s alt/garage-rock sound of Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr. or Mudhoney, you’ll like Yuck. “Get Away” is a fantastic song for bumming around in the summer, longing to be anywhere but where you are:

Summer sun says get out more, I need you
I want you, but I can’t get this feeling off my mind
I want you, I need you
I can’t get away

But is this album just a nostalgia machine? Or does the band add something new to the classic 90′s vibe? Listen and decide. And if you’re already familiar with the band, check out two new singles and their July tour dates at their blog.

High School Intern Edition: The Rise of the Combat Boot

May 4th, 2011 by The OJBG Team · 90's, Blog, DC, fashion, grunge, high school intern edition, OJBG, teen, teen things, teen web series, washingtonian

High School Intern Edition features a group of students from the Field School in Washington, DC, that interned with us for two weeks.

By: Ally Bailey

The Combat boot: the symbol of angst and revolution for decades has made a comeback.  Way back when, combat boots were considered cool for everyone, rebellious or not, not only because they looked badass but because they were actually sort of comfortable (nothing can get at your feet in leather as tough as that).  It had a period of dormancy for a couple years in the 2000s, but now that we’ve reached 2011 it seems that the gods of fashion have chosen the combat boot to revive itself.

Everywhere you go in DC, people are sporting the clunky shoes in a wide array of colors and styles, some even go as far as to redecorate them themselves (I saw a pair colored with Sharpie and studded with fake-rhinestones on the metro the other day.  Totally awesome.) Though the shoe is a classic throwback, this time around combat boots seem to have gotten a makeover.  Steve Madden has come out with boots in brighter colors, with tassles and frills as opposed to the straight military look favored by our beloved 90’s.

Whatever the style, combat boots are a beloved token of a past era, and the 90’s grunge shoe has proven itself to be a look that can’t be deterred.  The pair I have has suited me for both work and play, and I don’t know where I’d  be without my favorite throwback zappatas.

Will You Please Show Love by Spreading the Word?

April 15th, 2011 by Otessa · 20something, 90's, behind the scenes, Bishop's Garden, DC, Events, grunge, New Media, Film, TV, Video, Web, OJBG, Otessa, otessa ghadar, teen, teen things, teen web series, Uncategorized, washingtonian, washingtonians, webseries, Women In Film

Orange Juice in Bishop’s Garden has proved to be incredibly successful …but unfortunately is not profitable. OJBG makes no money and so every year I must raise funds for filming. And we need your help to continue it. Please show love by spreading the word about our IndieGoGo campaign for our upcoming season.

The show has achieved great acclaim:
–We are watched in 134 countries and still growing.
–Sometimes we’ll have more than 80,000 unique full episode views in 1 day (meaning that in one day 80,000 different people will watch a full episode, all the way through the credits).
–We’re winning awards, like the Telly we just got, which is amazing!
–OJBG was invited to the Dinah Shore weekend, to participate in the events there, and to be recognized for doing great things for the LGBT cause & community.

But, since OJBG makes no money for the company, every year we have to raise the money from scratch. Most shows at our level are made for around $50,000 per season. Ours is made for a SMALL FRACTION –just a very small FRACTION of that.

When I started this show, everyone said it was impossible– year after year they laugh in my face and tell me it is impossible — and year after year — it HAPPENS. We make it happen, to great acclaim.

But it takes a village! So please, I need your help to make it happen.

Our IndieGoGo Campaign can be found here:
http://www.indiegogo.com/ojinbg

There are special perks for contributing like Twitter shoutouts, signed memorabilia, walk on roles, character naming and more!
