After watching Madonna’s long-awaited Superbowl performance, I realized that she is pretty much a mystery to me even though I can recite the lyrics to about 90% of her songs. She is one of America’s greatest musical icons and has transcended time with her ever-evolving image, and yet, no one really knows who is behind those incredible biceps, bleached blonde hair, and gap tooth. With that said, I thought it would be a fun exercise to see what I could dig up on the musical legend. The following are some findings:

Her full name is Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone.

She is the oldest of 8 children.

Her mother died of breast cancer in 1963.

Madonna is Italian and was raised Roman Catholic.

Madonna married actor Sean Penn on her birthday in 1985. She divorced him on New Year’s Eve in 1988.

Madonna won a Golden Globe for Best Actress for her role of Eva Peron in Evita.

Madonna is ranked fourth in the list of best-selling artists of all time, right after Michael Jackson.

She has been nominated 68 times for an MTV Video Music Award and 28 times for a Grammy Award.

Madonna does NOT have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She was nominated for one, but turned it down.

Madonna has been in 22 films.

It’s summertime, but Gwen is oh-so-very cold. Sarah keeps calling, but Gwen has been totally dodging her calls for WEEKS. Her super shady, or as we like to call it, “up to no good behavior”, is getting worrisome. How dare she pass off her phone-tagging duties to her no-so-enthused NYC roomie! Going camping?! What is that all about? What is she trying to hide? What’s in the cards for Gwen + Sarah…?

This episode displays a prime example of life: ups and downs. We go through the joys of love at first sight and we go through the woes of loveless fights. We’ve been through the beginning and nearly the end of Gwen and Sarah’s relationship. The sun must set eventually, no matter how beautiful the sunrise is.

It’s a new day and I’m sure we’re all looking forward to seeing what’s in store for one of our favorite couples.

      Bodega

My roommate and I would constantly notice the ornate exterior of this Georgetown restaurant every time we went for a walk around town. Finally, we decided it was time to make a reservation and find out what the interior looked like. We got all dolled up for a girl’s night out and to little surprise, we discovered that Bodega was precisely the right location for a classy night in D.C. The restaurant is richly decorated in dark tones and decadent wallpapers and the tapas compliment the décor with their bold flavors and interesting combinations. The New Year deserves some adventurous new cuisine, and I suggest you start off with Bodega.

*Tip: The Arroz Meloso al Azafrán con Gambas, or the creamy saffron rice with grilled shrimp tapas plate was our favorite. Perhaps it will be yours too.

http://www.bodegadc.com/home.asp

Award Season

It is my personal favorite time of the year because it is AWARD SEASON. With the Golden Globes this Sunday, and the Oscars soon to follow, it’s time to catch up on this year’s best films, television shows, and performances before they announce the winners of those coveted golden statues. My personal favorites for this year include The Help and Midnight in Paris. What were yours?

*Tip: For those teens reading this that will be going to prom in the spring, the best inspiration comes from award shows. Pay attention to the star’s dresses, jewelry, shoes, bags, makeup, and hairstyles. It is way easier to develop your own look with a little inspiration and the award shows can give you HOURS of it.

The New Year

We are already a full two weeks into the New Year. Perhaps it’s the optimist in me, but I think the New Year is the perfect opportunity to reevaluate your life’s course and change some things that may not be beneficial to you and your well being. Whether it’s a change in jobs, a new hobby, revamped eating habits, more exercise, a new haircut, or any other form of change, the time is now for a terrific new year.

PR at Partners Salon and Spa

If your New Year’s resolution is to revamp your look, you should head over to the PR at Partners Salon in Foggy Bottom. I recently visited the salon to correct a botched hair-dye job and I could not have had a more pleasant experience. The hair stylists take the time to discuss with you your concerns, desired look, hair type, and management time before they touch anything. Aside from haircuts and coloring, the salon also does hair removal, facials, and other spa services. There are 14 other locations throughout D.C. and Virginia. This salon and spa also specializes in rejuvenating clients’ entire looks, from their hairstyle to their makeup and clothing through makeup and stylist consultations, perfect for New Year makeovers. For more information, check out their website.

*Tip: Jonathan was my hairstylist at the K Street Salon. He was fabulous, extremely receptive, and most welcoming. He walked me through every step of the process, answered all of my questions, and was full of conversation. Plus, my hair looked excellent when he was finished. I highly recommend him.

Yes, this is TRUE! I was actually in the recording studio — of the very kind and talented music-guru, Ben Ozeki — just last week. I was there with the lovely Ms. Ellen Winter (aka Sarah Roberts). I am extremely excited. There will be 3 songs on the EP — all tracks written & inspired by tracks composed by Brent Katz, and then performed by members of the cast. There is even a song called “Me, I’m Afraid of Nothing” and it sounds like a Hawaiian/Western. It is my favorite.

#9 MOVIES FROM OZ

I’ve been on a kick lately — watching coming of age movies from Down Under. The above still is from the wonderful movie “Looking for Alibrandi”, which is based on the eponymous book, “Looking for Alibrandi”, written by Melina Marchetta. Marchetta is absolutely amazing. Her book “On the Jellicoe Road” was one of the favorites that I read last year.

(*And PS if you haven’t seen Peter Weir’s “Picnic at Hanging Rock” from ’75 –then I suggest you go see it… run, NOW. It’s a staple of Aussie cinema. And it’s that good.)

And now for some “Honorable Mentions from OZ” :

#9 tomorrow when the war began

The above still is from the movie ‘Tomorrow When the War Began” (which is based off John Marsden’s best-selling book/series of the same name). Some reasons why it is great: Post-Apocalyptic survival story. Bad-Ass female lead. Coming-of-Age element. Lush Scenery. Strong Action Sequences with compelling cinematography.

#9 cont'd: "Puberty Blues"

And of course there is “Puberty Blues”. I know, I know, the name is kind of cringe-worthy. But, don’t be fooled by the slightly-sacharine name. The movie explores the extreme darkness and light of being 13, in the ’79 Sydney suburbs. The movie is (like the others listed in #9) based off a book of the same name. Incidentally, the book created quite a stir when it was published (mainly because the authors were only 18 when it was published, and also because the book was a candid auto-biographical account of their experiences being 13, and dealing with sex, heroin, and surfing).

#9 cont'd more "Puberty Blues"

By: Samantha

Okay, before you read any further, I must preface this blog post by stating that I have yet to actually see either one of the films I am about to promote. Nevertheless, I felt a strong need to highlight them in a blog post for OJBG because they seem absolutely DIVINE. The films I speak of are “Like Crazy” and “A Week With Marilyn.”

I must have re-watched the trailer for “Like Crazy” at least 38 times. From what I can gather from the trailer, it is a tale of a modern romance between a guy from the United States and a girl from Great Britain. She overstays her Visa while in the United States and gets banned from reentering the US again, having been shipped back to her home in the UK. This inevitably puts a whopping strain on the young couple’s relationship and causes some serious changes and reevaluations of their lives’ courses. Here is a link to the YouTube video of the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTUvX_pYNBM

The second film, “A Week With Marilyn,” just hit theaters, unlike “Like Crazy” which has been in theaters for over a month. The film, an adaptation from a book written by Colin Clark, stars Michelle Williams fresh off her last cinematic hit, “Blue Valentine.” If her performance in “Blue Valentine” is any indication of the level of performance she will bring to this new film, I have no doubt that this film will be anything less than spectacular. As a die-hard Marilyn Monroe fan, upon hearing of this film, I was very apprehensive about whether or not Michelle Williams could pull this role off. I suppose I will inevitably have to see it to decide for myself whether or not she did the screen siren any justice. I think the best part of this movie will ultimately be Emma Watson’s premier in a film post Harry Potter. The plotline follows Marilyn’s alleged relationship with Sir Laurence Olivier’s assistant and highlights the trials and travails she faced at the height of her stardom. The link to the YouTube video of the trailer is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_tbnTM7zVE

If any of our readers have seen either one of these movies already, please comment with your thoughts and opinions! We welcome ALL comments!

It’s okay to give in to the camp tradition of kissing the clock and making a wish at 11:11. Take this once in a lifetime opportunity to make a wish at 11:11 p.m. on 11/11/11.

*Tip: Be careful what you wish for- it may actually come true this time around.

5. The Harry Potter Finale

If you’re like me and enjoy a cozy night in on the couch with Chinese food fresh out of the carton and your best pals next to you every once and awhile, I suggest making a night like this happen this weekend in celebration of the DVD release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Who would give up an opportunity for relaxation, quality time with the pals, and a night to relish in the FINAL CHAPTER OF HARRY POTTER? I certainly would not.

*Tip: Watch Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone first. Your mind will be blown by how young the trio was, how sucky the special effects were, and how incredibly wonderful the series’ beginning still is.

It’s been a while since I saw her live…actually it was several years ago, when she and Adam Green were still Moldy Peaches. There was a bunny suit involved & the drinking of (fake/real?) pee on stage. Quite memorable. I also have one of Adam Green’s sweaters. Long story. It was bought from off of his back.

I just love Terrence Malick’s films. Apparently Malick once told his DP, “imagine your camera is the bird in the moment before it takes flight”. And right there, lies all my admiration and awe… To be a director with such a poetic mind.

Q'orianka Kilcher as Pocahontas in Malick's "New World"

And Q’orianka Kilcher gave a tremendous, nuanced performance as Pocahontas. (and she was only 14!) And kudos to Malick & the production team for keeping the love story from ever seeming creepy, which it so easily could have.

Apparenly Q’orianka is now a recurring character on “Sons of Anarchy”, which makes me really regret letting that show fall by the wayside. Now I need to catch up on my viewing.

Every week when I have to think up a new topic for a blog post, I find myself reminiscing about my own childhood during the (very) late 90s. More often than not, I quickly end up spending way too much time rewatching YouTube videos of my personal favorite 90s TV show episodes. After I’ve had my 90s TV show fix, I start to wonder: What ever happened to these quirky teens we grew up with? Well, for all of you who ask this same question, I now have the answers:

Ben Savage played the adorable Cory Matthews on Boy Meets World. After the show ended, he graduated from Stanford University. Smarty pants. He has done some guest stints on other television shows and had a couple of roles in pretty much non-existent movies. Hey, at least he’s an intelligent lad.

Danielle Fishel, the beautiful Topanga Lawrence on Boy Meets World, ended up becoming a spokeswoman for Nutrisystem and hosts a show called “The Dish” on the Style Network.

William Daniels, the unforgettable Mr. Feeney on Boy Meets World, is, in-fact, still kicking at 82 years old. I think that’s an accomplishment in itself.

Melissa Joan Hart, the spell-bounding Sabrina the Teenage Witch, currently stars on another ABC Family sitcom, Melissa and Joey, starring fellow 90s star, Joey Lawrence. She also competed on a season of Dancing With The Stars. She is a mommy of two boys and has an extremely sexy husband, if I do say so myself.

Candace Cameron, the bright-eyed D.J. Tanner on Full House, also stuck with ABC Family and acts on it’s gymnastics oriented television show, Make It Or Break It. She also got married to a hockey player and has three kiddies.

by Otessa

Many viewers have had questions about OJBG. “Why do I feel like I’m missing things sometimes? Why are there gaps in the story line between seasons? Why are there new characters, and mysteriously disappearing/reappearing charcacters? Why do you use corded phones?”

Every season is a new summer– and a year passes in between. So Season 1 is the summer of ’94, Season 2 is summer of 95…and a lot of the story line is not just what IS happening…but also is about playing catch up — trying to figure out what happened throughout that passed year. It is a bit like a mystery. I like that when the characters have lives outside of what we see on the screen. It gives them more life and they aren’t always knowable. We have to get to know them.

I chose summer because it is, in many was, the quintessential high school time period. While you are in school, the social order, and the hierarchy are constantly being re-instated daily, because of the pre-ordained and constantly repeating schedule. But during the summer– people change, their schedules change. Sometimes people get thrown into the mix with an unexpected crew. Sometimes people have to go away to their grandmother’s for the summer. Sometimes they have summer school or work and cant hang out like they used to. Sometimes people have camp many states away. Whatever it is– the order is changed — destabilized. And a person’s place, at that age, is uncertain. Their friends, their “standing”, their beliefs, the very structure of their lives — these can all change, becoming re-ordered or dis-ordered. It is in many ways the most fitting representation of that unknown, unknoweable, unsettling age — precisely because it is so unsettled and up-in-the-air.

Also, in terms of characters disappearing and re-appearing… we are a super indie and we don’t have the luxury of 5 year contracts, which is how most TV shows work, and how they are able to guarantee that the actors can stay around for a while. (Ever wonder what happened to Carly Kittredge-McBride?? Yea — me too. I had big plans in store for her, which I had to scrap.) Sometimes our characters/actors just arent available for that season. Sometimes they have moved, sometimes they have job conflicts, sometimes they are college visiting, sometimes they have summer school. Simply put — we have to roll with the punches a lot more. And we hope that you are willing to too.

And as for the corded phones… if you have to ask, the show is set in the 90′s, and you might just be a lost cause.
