Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls #1)Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Where to start… there are so many remarkable and wonderful elements to this book. The prose is lyrical and moving– and it conjurs an icy, pristine environment in a very stirring way. Stiefvater’s writing is impressive and evocative.

Even better, was the relationship between Grace & Sam. The relationship between Grace & Sam is believable, heart-felt, & surprisingly healthy (despite the odds). To put it simply– I cared about these characters (and couldn’t put the book down!)

I suppose many will make a comparison to Twilight. However, aside from the supernatural element– this book deserves better than to be compared to Twilight. (Ok, so, I should probably just state right now for the record, that I *despised* Twilight.)

Shiver features a nuanced relationship, (with fully developed characters, whose relationship made sense…and was actually interesting– shockingly rare!)

It was definitely a page-turner, which I couldn’t put down! The only reason I gave it 4 stars, and not 5, was because the introductory pages were not as tight and compelling as the rest of the book. (The book suffers a little in the beginning, until the characters finally meet up. But around page 20, the book picks up steam and doesn’t fail once thereafter). However, who knows, I may yet go back & give it that 5th star. Also, I’m psyched to learn there’s a sequel coming out. I’ll definitely read it.
